Hey Cousins! Since so many of you loved my other mac and cheese recipesโ€”baked mac and cheese and an easy stovetop macaroni and cheese recipeโ€”I decided to circle back and share my slow cooker macaroni and cheese recipe. This recipe is super convenient! You don’t have to boil or drain pasta. You also don’t have to worry about babysitting this side dish. This slow cooker mac is super simple yet packed with so much flavor.

Some macaroni and cheese recipes are complicated with a ton of ingredients. Others are super simple boxed mac and cheese-style recipes. My slow cooker mac and cheese is a perfect mix of easy ingredients and delicious, slow-cooked flavor.

I don’t use any gouda, Velveeta, or any expensive cheeses. Nor do I use evaporated milk or eggs. I keep it simple when it comes to this crockpot mac. If you’re looking for the perfect mac and cheese recipe to serve at Christmas or Easter, family gatherings, or even an easy weeknight dinner, this is definitely the one for you!

Ingredients You Need for the Best Slow Cooker Macaroni and Cheese

So, what ingredients DO you need for Crockpot mac and cheese? I promised simple, so here is what youโ€™ll need for a creamy Crockpot mac. Head to the grocery store and gather up these ingredients:

  • UNCOOKED macaroni noodles
  • Sharp cheddar cheese & Colby cheese: I highly recommend buying a block of cheese from the deli or cheese section and shredding it yourselfโ€”itโ€™s a million times better!
  • Butter (salted or unsalted, whichever you have on hand is fine)
  • Half & half: For best results, use half & half instead of using whole milk. The half & half makes the macaroni and cheese a lot creamier!
  • Campbellโ€™s Cheddar Cheese condensed soup: This will work as our cheese sauce. If you’re not a fan of cheese soup, you can use 12-15 ounces of Velveeta or American cheese.
  • Black pepper and plain or smoked paprika (feel free to add some extra seasoning based on your tastes, like onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne for some heat, or even mustard powder for extra flavor)

Since I use a good amount (and variety) of cheese in this mac and cheese recipe, I donโ€™t add any salt. However, if youโ€™d like to add a teaspoon of salt, feel free to do so!

Recommended kitchen tools for slow cooker mac and cheese:

  • A Crockpot or another brand of slow cooker (I recommend at least a 6-quart slow cooker)
  • A cheese grater to shred your cheese
  • Measuring cups and spoons

FAQs & Tips for Making the BEST Slow Cooker Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

A Crockpot full of creamy, cheesy, slow cooker macaroni and cheese. This mac and cheese recipe is made with a decadent cheese sauce seasoned with pepper and paprika that coats and perfectly cooks elbow macaroni pasta.

Now, since yโ€™all are family, I want my Cousins to know all the tips and tricks for making the best slow cooker mac and cheese possible. For the best results, follow my written recipe! I also have a video tutorial if youโ€™re a visual learner. If you follow the ingredients and instructions in the recipe card below, you will have the creamiest macaroni and cheese ever.

However, if you insist on changing up the recipe, I’ve included some frequently asked questions as well as pro tips from me to make sure no matter what, you’ll have a crowd-pleasing dish!

How often do you need to stir slow cooker mac and cheese while cooking?

When it comes to this recipe, a lot of people ask me if I stir occasionally. I personally don’t stir once my Crockpot mac starts cooking. However, you can if you choose. Actually, if you have an older slow cooker, I highly suggest it!

What is the recommended cook time for Crockpot macaroni and cheese?

In my recipe, I cook my macaroni and cheese for three hours on LOW in my slow cooker. Now, there are a ton of slow cookers on the marketโ€”some are manual, some are pre-programmable, and some allow for different increments of cooking time. It depends on your slow cooker. Also, keep in mind that older Crockpots tend to run a little hotter than newer slow cookers. Therefore, if youโ€™re using an older slow cooker, it may take less time to cook. To prevent your mac and cheese from burning, check on it periodically!

Can you half or double this recipe?

YES, you absolutely can double, triple, or even half this recipe depending on how many youโ€™re cooking for. The cooking time should NOT be affected, but keep an eye on it throughout the cooking process to make sure. Also, ensure that your slow cooker is large enough to double or triple the recipe.

Should I cook the pasta first or put it in the Crockpot uncooked?

The pasta is NOT cooked before putting it in the slow cooker! Put UNCOOKED pasta into your slow cookerโ€”otherwise, the pasta will be mushy and gross at the end of cooking.

How do you keep the mac and cheese from sticking to the slow cooker?

To keep your mac and cheese from sticking, spray the Crockpot with nonstick cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner (which also allows for easy cleanup!).

What are the best cheeses for creamy macaroni and cheese?

As I said, I highly recommend following my recipe as far as what cheese to use. However, at the end of the day, it comes down to YOUR preference. Here are some other popular cheeses to use for a creamy slow cooker mac and cheese:

  • Gouda or Gruyere cheese
  • White Cheddar cheese
  • Mild or Medium Cheddar cheese (if you donโ€™t like Sharp Cheddar)
  • American Cheese
  • Mozzarella Cheese
  • Pepperjack Cheese (adds a little bit of a zingy kick!)

Whatโ€™s the best pasta for mac and cheese?

Traditional elbow macaroni pasta is the best for a macaroni and cheese recipe. However, you could use shells or short-tube pasta (like cavatappi). Any shape that will hold onto the creamy cheese sauce is a great option.

Is heavy cream or evaporated milk better for mac and cheese?

I prefer heavy cream because it makes the macaroni and cheese creamier. Also, heavy cream has more fat than evaporated milk. However, if you want a lower-fat option, you can use evaporated milk, and it will do just fineโ€”it’s just not MY preference!

Can you freeze slow cooker mac and cheese? Can you make it ahead of time?

Yes, you can freeze this slow cooker mac recipe. I recommend reheating it in the oven rather than in the slow cooker for the best results. As far as making it ahead of time, I HIGHLY recommend making it the day of. It is practically a dump-and-go recipe, and it really doesnโ€™t take that much time. Itโ€™s MUCH better when the creamy cheese sauce is made fresh, with freshly shredded cheese.

I don’t have a slow cookerโ€”how can I make this slow-cooked macaroni and cheese recipe?

Well, first of all, honey, if you don’t have a slow cookerโ€”get yourself one! Treat yoโ€™self! I have a TON of delicious slow cooker recipes, so itโ€™ll be put to good use! However, you can still make a deliciously creamy mac and cheese in the oven, but thatโ€™s a whole different recipe!

How to Make Creamy Slow Cooker Mac and Cheese

A close-up look at the creamy slow cooker mac and cheese in a Crockpot. A creamy cheese sauce coats perfectly cooked macaroni noodles and is seasoned with black pepper and paprika for flavor.

When I tell yโ€™all this is an easy recipe, I ainโ€™t lyinโ€™! It really could not be easier.

First, I start by making the base of my creamy cheese sauce. Then, mix the half and half with the cheddar cheese soup until well combined. Why am I making macaroni and cheese with cheddar cheese soup? Because itโ€™s the PERFECT base for a creamy, decadent cheese sauce. Seriously, even a can of Campbellโ€™s Cheddar Cheese soup comes with a recipe for mac and cheese! Match made in heaven. I also add my seasoningsโ€”black pepper and smoked paprikaโ€”to my cheese sauce.

Next, youโ€™re going to toss everything in your slow cooker. Start with the uncooked pasta, then add about half of the shredded cheese and butter. Pour the cheese sauce in and give it all a good mix. Top it off with the remainder of the shredded cheese, put the lid on, and let that baby slow cook for about 3 hours.

It turns out to be the creamiest, most decadent mac and cheese recipe ever. Once done, turn your slow cooker to the โ€œwarmโ€ setting to keep the mac and cheese perfectly heated if you’re serving it as a side at a party or holiday gathering. This is one of my favorite recipes for mac and cheese (and believe meโ€”I have a lot), as well as a family favorite! It saves precious oven space during hectic holiday cooking; it’s full of flavor–the ultimate comfort food.

So if I wanted to do this receipe but baked it at the end , for that crispy top. Do I have to cook my noodles before hand. Or just follow the receipe n then baked it ? And if so how long should I bake it for?

          • Rosie says

            November 24, 2016 at 10:46 am

No, don’t cook the pasta before hand. If you want to bake it afterwards, you’ll have to do so until it reaches your preference.

There is this soul food place where I live and I had their mac and cheese (white cheeses) at a catered event. They won’t cater unless I order a minimun of 500. It was the best mac and cheese and I have experienced different ways and cannot find their way. It melted it your mouth, it was so good! The cheese wasn’t thick and sticky like most recipes I have tried. Would you happen to have a similar recipe? It seemed like they topped it with yellow cheese but underneath all that was white cheeses. Thanks!

I’m new to the crockpot game, and will try this recipe this weekend. If I wanted to add some sort of chopped up meat, how would you recommend I add it so that it heats up safely? Let’s say either a sausage or ground beef. Would I brown them first, then throw them in the cooker with everything else? Would three hours on low be enough time? Thanks!

Hi Phil! You can add smoked sausage in with during the last 30 minutes of cooking. As for ground beef, make sure that you brown it first, drain the fat, then add it in during the last 30 minutes of cooking.

Can this recipe be doubled? I have an event that I need to feed 24 people a side dish and this recipe looks FABULOUS! I’ve never made it in the crock pot before but I’m always trying new things so I’m giving it a go. I can do them at separate times if you think I need to do them one batch at a time.

I found this recipe a few days ago,and decided to make some in my 2.5 qt. crockpot to try it. I halved the recipe,as there’s just the 2 of us.The soup can here in Canada is 10 ounces,so I used it all and used a bit less half and half. I didn’t have Colby cheese, but did have Gruyere,so I used that. I used smoked paprika. It was so quick and easy to put together; it was delicious,my husband loved it too! I’ve never put uncooked pasta in my crockpot befote today; I won’t hesitate to make other recipes calling for uncooked pasta. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Do you think I could assemble the whole mixture, store over night in fridge, pop it into crockpot in the morning and top with remaining cheese? I’m worried about the creamy mixture and uncooked macaroni maybe developing an interesting texture sitting together overnight. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!!

I have been making oven baked mac and cheese for years, but this Thanksgiving I will be saving oven space with this slow cooker mac and a fried turkey!! I will also use Tillamook sharp cheddar cheese and muenster cheese this time around. Plus a smidge more seasoning.

Thanks again for this holy grail mac & cheese recipe. Happy Holiday to you and yours.

Hi I have a question regarding the amount of half and half to use, the recipe calls for 2 & 3/4 cups half and half but in the video it looks more like 1 & 3/4. I already started making it and used the measurements as listed. Hope it’s ok! I also had like half a cup extra noodles in my box so I just threw those in as well so I wouldn’t have to save the last bit, I’ll see how that turns out. It smells great!

Loved this recipe. I have a 6 qt oval crockpot. I measured and 1 lb box of elbows is just shy of 4 cups so I bumped the 1/2 &1/2 up to 3 1/4 c. The soup you show is a bonus size which isn’the always available so I just used 2 of the standard 10 3/4 oz cans which was fine because of the extra macaroni.
PLEASE shred your own cheese. Pre-shredded is coated with anti caking powder to keep it from sticking & clumping together in the package. It also prevents the cheese from melting smoothly in recipes like this. Think this is my final search for a mac & cheese recipe.

I made a double recipe for a pot luck at work – yes I literally made it at work. Threw everything in the crockpot in the morning, turned it on, and it was ready for lunch. I was somewhat hesitant because you never know how things will come out when making a new recipe and I had no “plan B”. It was fantastic, just about the only dish that got completely eaten. Not only do I recommend it but others have asked for another appearance of this. Great recipe – a keeper for sure.

This week will be the first time I’ve ever hosted turkey dinner (yay Christmas!). Realized I didn’t have anything “kid friendly” on the menu and needed a mac and cheese. So glad I came across your recipe! From the reviews, it’s sure to be a hit. Wish me luck in the kitchen! I love to cook but find timing dishes quite tricky. Glad I’ll have this to set and forget. Merry Christmas ๐Ÿ™‚

I made this recipe last week for my Office Christmas Luncheon. The mac and cheese was a hit!! I used Gouda, Havarti and Kraft Triple Cheddar (shredded vermont white cheddar, sharp and mild cheddar with cream cheese). Yes I used one package of already shredded cheese and it didn’t hurt the taste. The only thing I did do different other than the cheese selection is add Cayenne pepper to spice it up a bit. Other than that, this recipe will be used again for Christmas Dinner for my family.

I know this sounds like a crazy question…
I am bringing this as well as scalloped potatoes to the family dinner on Christmas day, would this mixture work to make the scalloped potatoes layering potatoes, onions and cheese sauce, with longer cooking time of course?

Tried this last week, and it was delicious. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out because I’m not the most experienced cook, but it was perfect. Will make it again and try different cheeses.

Hi Rosie, I just had a quick question. My crackpot setting are for 2,4,6,8, and 10 hours for high or low. Since the recipe asks for 3 hours on low, can I put it for 2 hours and leave the rest warm? If I could leave it for 4 hours on low I would but I have church tomorrow morning and I need it by noon to be ready….

I made this last night, and it’s a-ma-zing!!! Everyone kept raving about how good it was! I made a double recipe, and 3 hours was the perfect amount of time. One helpful hint: If you plan to keep in warm for an extended period of time at a party like I did, turn it from the “low” setting down to “warm” or it will dry out. Keep extra half-and-half on hand if that happens. A little splash of that, a quick stir, and it’s back to being perfect! For the record, I used bagged shredded cheese, mixed all ingredients together, and just poured it all into the crockpot at once. Perfect! This recipe is a keeper!!! Delish! Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Rosie,
I donโ€™t know why I let the Womenโ€™s Ministry ladies talk me into making the Mac & Cheese (you know I use the box stuff). I needed a recipe to cook in the crock pot to serve after church, so I google’d, and God sent me you! Deacon Delicious turned his nose up at crock pot mac & cheese until his wife tasted it. Then he wanted to know โ€œhow you make that?โ€ (I still havenโ€™t told him.) It was the best Iโ€™ve ever made. I doubled the recipe and none was left. The texture after 3 hours was absolutely perfect and the tasteโ€ฆ.scrumptious! Itโ€™s my new Go-To. And Iโ€™m trying out your other recipes as well. You are very gifted. Love you, Girl!

,I made this once before about a year ago and it was amazing my guests loved it and ate it all up ( it was a large family birthday party) . I was wondering if I add a little more cheese should I add a little more 1/2 a nd 1/2 to keep it from getting too dry at the very bottom….does that work?>

This was great. However I only needed to cook it for 2 hours because my crock pot cooked it a little faster. It was sticky and really thick so I had to add more half and half but it was stiff great! Next time I’ll make sure to put it in for less time – Thanks for sharing this recipe!

    Thanks!

You can use either, as far as butter. You can substitute the colby cheese with more cheddar, or try adding your favorite cheese.

I just tried this and it was delicious! I decided to make some modifications the second time I made it. I needed to make enough for a party of about 20 guests, but as main dish as I was creating a Mac & Cheese Bar with a bunch of toppings. I pretty much doubled the recipe in my crock pot and did two crock pots full (4qt & 4.5qt) and cooked ea crock pot for 3 hrs. It was the perfect amount for 20 guests as a main dish. Here are the changes that I made first to the SINGLE recipe before I doubled it. Instead of 15 oz of the condensed cheese soup I did 5 ounces of the cheese condensed soup + 5 oz of the NACHO cheese condensed soup. For the elbow noodles instead of 3 cups I bumped it up to 32oz (I think that is about 6 cups) To make it a hair healthier, I used margarine instead of butter and fat-free half-and-half.

Wow! Super easy & soooo good. A hit with kids AND adults! I received lots of compliments & some even said it tasted like Luby’s mac n cheese. I used margarine instead of butter, doubled the salt, & I used 1/2 whipping cream & 1/2 whole milk instead of half and half. Since I needed it quick, I boiled the macaroni in a pot until it was ALMOST done then I drained & dumped it in the Crock Pot. I mixed the cooked pasta with the sauce, then added the remaining cheese on top & cooked on HIGH for 45 minutes. Perfect!! I kept it on WARM at the party. This would also be great baked in the oven!

Hi Rosie!! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe, itโ€™s fantastic! Every time I make this itโ€™s an absolute hit. I made two crockpots worth yesterday for thanksgiving and there were no leftovers!
Quick question, so the Campbellโ€™s soup at my grocery store only comes in a 10 1/2 size so I usually use 1 and a half cans but when I watch your video my half and half and condensed soup mixture always looks so much more โ€œliquidyโ€ than yours. It still comes out perfect but just wondering if Iโ€™m doing anything wrong. I measure 2 3/4 cups of half and half exactly.

I doubled the recipe and brought it to a party. It was the only food at the party that ran out! People loved it! I am making it again for the same crowd for an upcoming birthday party, people asked me to make it and asked for the recipe. I am also making it again for a work party. For those asking about doubling the recipe, I did not have to increase the cook time. I have a standard 6 quart (Low, High, Warm). I also added more cheese simply because I had shredded extra and it was delicious. This recipe got me hooked on no longer buying pre-shredded cheese. Buying block cheese and shredding it yourself tastes so much better than pre-shredded cheese and it does make a better mac and cheese.

I have been making this crockpot Mac and cheese recipe for at least two years now. Just have never written a review until today. It goes over so big with my family also extended family. I have it in my crockpot now getting ready to take to my little six year old grandsons birthday party dinner. This is the dish everyone asks me to bring for any family function. Even my 87 year old mom said it is the best macaroni and cheese sheโ€™s ever eaten! Sheโ€™s even fixed it to take to potlucks at her church. Thanks for such a delicious and easy recipe.

Everyone loved it. Even making it in a slow cooker, it reminded me of baked mac and cheese. Very good recipe!!!!!!!!!

OMG this Mac & cheese is SO good. Living in the South people here put eggs in Mac & cheese and it curdles and is just not that good. This is a pot of creamy goodness. For holidays I make it as written but for a weeknight dinners and potlucks I half the recipe and use whole milk. Everyone loves it.

Made this crockpot mac and cheese and it is delicious! So easy to prepare, short cooking time and extra creamy. I followed directions, only 1 can of cheddar cheese soup. We used 3 cups of sharp cheddar, not using the colby. I added a bit more pepper when serving. Itโ€™s a keeper, perfect for family dinners. Thank you!

This was the biggest hit at a surprise birthday bbq. I saw someone go back and get seconds and it was an entire plate of this mac and cheese lol!!! I will say that it needs to be served somewhat quickly, sitting in the crockpot on warm too long dries it out and the noodles start to split so time this perfectly! I made it too early and had to add some half and half to re-hydrate it. Obviously still amazing, but felt bad the guests didn’t get to experience the perfection I did when it was just done cooking.

I made this last year as a side dish for one of our holiday meals. My college-age son said, “Oh, man, this slaps!” I took that as a compliment. It makes an excellent macaroni-and-cheese. Fast forward to this coming Thanksgiving, and I told my husband I needed to go look for “that” macaroni and cheese recipe. It’s delicious!! This is probably the only macaroni-and-cheese recipe I would ever consider making in a crockpot. I followed the directions exactly as they were written, and it’s just perfect. Thanks for this great recipe!!!

    Hi Rosie,
I want to make this for a large work gathering and looking to TRIPLE the recipe. A couple of questions:
    1. Can I use a roaster pan instead of crock pot (for size of contents)?
    2. If so, do you know what temp setting I should use that correlates with LOW on a crock pot?
    3. What would be your recommended time?

Thank you – I have read these comments and the great reviews so I am excited to try this!!

Hi Cindy! You can definitely cook this in a large roaster pan. Be sure to cook the pasta before hand. No need to cook it on low, you can bake it on 350 F for about 40 minutes.

So…. I’ve been making this every year, for probably the last 3 maybe 4 years. I LOVE southern macaroni and cheese (I’m from NC-and that’s how we do it)….. When I tell y’all that THIS is the BEST AND CLOSEST AND EASIEST AND CHEAPEST thing you’ll get to baked Mac and cheese! AND IT IS DELICIOUS!!! It’s EVERYBODY’S favorite every time I make it. Whatever you do, don’t use the pre-shredded cheese-it doesn’t taste quite the same (although pre-shredded cheese made with cream cheese is probably the closest thing but I’d still recommend shredding your own cheese). Anyway, you did the damn thing on this!

I made this for Easter. It was a hit and everyone wanted more. I didn’t change anything but I made a mistake but it turned out really good. Because I doubled the recipe I had to buy 2 cans of the cheddar cheese soup. I mistakenly bought 1 can of the soup and 1 can of broccoli cheese soup. I didn’t have time to return to the store so I decided to use the soup. No one knew the difference. It was delicious. I will definitely make it again but use the
cheddar cheese soup. Thanks again for showing me how to make this in the slow cooker.

This is my favorite easy Mac & Cheese recipe! I never get boiled pasta right so this takes any guess work out. And- it’s a delicious, creamy recipe! I do have to stir it with my older crockpot so I don’t get a burnt spot. I layer 1/2 the Cheese on top but then stir it in after an hour or so. The pasta cooks perfectly, but don’t cook it more than 3 hours.
