Hey friends! Today, I’m showing you how to make my tried-and-true oven-baked barbecue pork chops. This recipe is super easy to whip up, and baked barbecue pork chops are perfect for busy nights during the week. It takes very little time to prepare this pork chops recipe—all you need are some pantry staples! You can have a delicious dinner on the table in less than an hour.

What I love about these pork chops is how easy the recipe is. There’s very little prep. You don’t have to worry about a complicated marinade, prepping the meat, or any other steps. Simply season, bake, add some sauce, and you’re good to go. So let’s jump on to making these delicious oven-baked barbecue pork chops.

Ingredients Needed for Baked Barbecue Pork Chops

The best part about this recipe—besides the fact that it’s dang delicious—is how simple these ingredients are. I bet you already have most of the ingredients on hand. Here’s what you need:

  • Pork chops: I use bone-in pork chops, but feel free to use boneless pork chops or pork steaks.
  • Seasonings: I use my very own homemade barbecue rub, which is pretty amazing! Read on to learn how to make a homemade BBQ dry rub.
  • BBQ sauce: I use Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce in this recipe, but feel free to use your favorite barbeque sauce. (I have a mango peach bourbon BBQ sauce that would be bomb.com with pork chops.)
  • Onions: Chopped onions are an essential aromatic in this pork chops recipe. Use yellow, white, or even red onion for some sweetness.

What’s the best cut of pork chop to use for baked barbecue pork chops?

Did you know there are five cuts of pork chops to choose from? Pork chops come from the back area of a pig, from the hips to the shoulder—the same area as pork tenderloin. Each pork chop cut has a different flavor and recommended cooking methods for best results.

For my baked barbecue pork chops, I use bone-in pork chops. Bone-in pork chops are less susceptible to overcooking and have a ton of flavor. You could also use shoulder pork chops or pork steaks. I’ve made oven barbecue pork steaks several times, and they come out terrific! Boneless pork chops are another popular option. However, the lack of connective tissue (fat) and bone in boneless pork chops means they can overcook quickly, become dry, and have less flavor.

Homemade BBQ Rub for Baked Barbecue Pork Chops

I always use my homemade barbecue rub to season my oven-baked pork chops. Now, this dry BBQ rub is my own creation. For those of you who may not know, I have my very own seasoning line called Rosamae Seasonings. I wanted to create homemade seasonings that knock your cooking up as many notches as possible! You can find classic seasonings like seasoning salt and garlic pepper, as well as custom-made creations like my pork seasoning, yams spice, or brown sugar rub.

I haven’t bottled the magic that is my homemade barbecue rub just yet, but when I tell y’all it’s the best dang homemade barbecue seasoning you’re going to find, I’m not wrong! Sure, you could use a store-bought BBQ rub, but it won’t be as good as my homemade recipe. You need:

  • Light brown sugar
  • Salt OR salt-free seasoning
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Paprika
  • Ground black pepper
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Parsley flakes

Check out the recipe card at the end of this post for exact measurements. You can make a larger batch of this homemade barbecue seasoning to keep it on hand for anything you need. It goes great on chicken, beef, pork–you name it.

How to Cook Pork Chops in the Oven

Three oven-baked barbecue pork chops sit on a white plate sprinkled with parsley flakes. These baked pork chops are seasoned with a savory BBQ rub packed with flavor.

The first step to making oven-baked pork chops is minimal prep. First, make sure your chops are nice and clean. A quick rinse under cold water and a pat dry with paper towels will do just fine. Then, lay the pork chops on a baking sheet and drizzle them with olive oil.

Next, generously season the pork chops with your homemade barbecue rub. Make sure you season both sides of the chops, gently rubbing the seasoning into the meat.

We will bake these pork chops in a baking dish, on a baking tray, or in a roasting pan. Give the pan a nice spray with cooking oil, or line the pan with aluminum foil for easier cleanup. Chop one large onion and add it to the baking dish with the pork chops. I bake my pork chops covered in my roasting pan for 25 minutes.

Once done, uncover the pan and pour in your favorite barbecue sauce. I am not married to a brand—buy whatever is on sale, your go-to brand, or a homemade sauce. Make sure to completely cover those chops in that sweet, tangy sauce. Put them back in the oven, uncovered, for another 15 minutes, and you’re done!

How long should I bake my pork chops in the oven?

The total cooking time for baked pork chops depends on the thickness of your pork chops. Chops that are 1-inch thick (the average thickness for most pork chops) will take between 25 and 30 minutes to cook in a 350-degree oven. Covered chops take slightly less time, about 18 to 25 minutes.

You should cook baked barbecue pork chops to an internal temperature of 145 degrees. Always use a meat thermometer to ensure the chops are cooked to the right temperature.

Can I marinate or brine baked barbecue pork chops?

Yes, you can definitely marinate or brine these pork chops, but it is NOT required for this recipe! Brining before seasoning will make the pork chops tender and juicy. A simple brine—water, salt, and sugar—is all you need.

What should I serve with baked pork chops?

You can serve baked barbecue pork chops with just about any favorite side dish. Try a potato side—like creamy mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, or cheesy scalloped potatoes. Serve it with green beans, moist cornbread, or corn on the cob (toss the corn right into the oven too)! Even homemade dinner rolls would be perfect with barbecue pork chops.

You do some amazing cooking,, I mean you cook from scratch also. What can’t you cook?
My daughter loves your fried cabbage so much, sometimes it’s all that she wants. There was a time when she would never eat cabbage. I think I cook about five heads of cabbage per month now.
I need a recipe for stuffed shrimp with real crabmeat and I want to do a lemon coconut cake. Let me know if you plan on doing either of those please.
Thank you and keep up the excellent work.

I found your recipe for the baked barbecue pork chops and homemade rub. I followed the directions exactly and was nervous because I really shouldn’t be allowed in a kitchen. They were wonderful! This is hands down the best oven BBQ pork steak I have ever had. It was so tender I could cut it with a fork. I made your BBQ spice rub it is so good! Since I am allergic to cayenne pepper and had no paprika, so I just substituted them both with Chipotle chili powder. Gave me the heat and smokiness needed for it. I used Pork Shoulder Steaks. My family loved it. I loved it. A keeper for sure.

i tried your recipe as I was in a bind for ideas. I followed it to the letter (except ,I added 1 can of crushed pineapple on top of the onions). It was a hit with the kids but I believe the extra juices from the pineapple thinned out the BBQ sauce too much. Next time I’m following your recipe and I’m sure it will be Amazing! (Grandma’s peach pie was the other recipe I tried) and both recipes worked beautifully. I followed this recipe exactly and it came out fantastic. I have never baked such tender and juicy pork chops before. Thank you for sharing!

TOTALLY AWESOME! This is hands-down the best recipe for oven-baked pork chops! The sauce is AMAZING!

Making this tonight! Read every comment and i just have one question, does this make for good leftovers?
I make dinner regular time because I have kids but my boyfriend doesn’t get home from work till around midnight, So he microwaves his dinner. Would this be good for that?

Love this recipe! Easy, quick, simple and the chops turned out perfectly tender, moist and flavorful. Couldn’t find the BBQ dry rub recipe on the site, so I just used garlic powder, cajun seasoning, paprika and salt. Next time I make it, might leave the garlic powder out of the rub. (I adore garlic, but not sure that it fit with the flavor profile.)

    Highly recommend!

Can you bake thin pork chops this way also. I really don’t like thick pork chops

I am not a big fan of barbecue pork chops, but my husband loves them. I always tend to overcook them. With this recipe they are moist and tender every time.

I just pulled them out of the oven and they smell Wonderful!! Also Fork checked them and they are so tender! For some reason they are watery. Was it because I brined them ?

Used different seasonings (based off what I had on hand) and let marinate overnight. I seared them before baking. Following baking temp and time- 350 25min covered, remove and add BBQ sauce, then put in for another 15min uncovered. Perfect and juicy! Gonna look for more of your recipes!

These pork chops turned out fine. I wanted to try a little healthier dinner. We always flour and season and then fry. Thanks for giving us a different way and a healthier way. Jim

Good afternoon Rosie, I came across your recipe for barbecue baked pork chops & thecrub you crafted, however, the recipe for the “rub” was not available. In the initial instructions to create the entire recipe is available, but not the rub. I could have missed.
    Best regards,
