  1. Southern Pinto Beans and Ham Hocks Made in the Crock Pot

How to make southern style pinto beans and ham hocks in the Crock Pot.

Hey Friends! As a busy wife and mother , I’m usually strapped for time. During the busy week, I try to make meals that aren’t time consuming, and I do so by using my Crock Pot on some of those busy days. I absolutely love using my Crock Pot. I love the fact that I can practically just throw everything in the pot, and walk away. Like seriously, It doesn’t get much easier than that. I use my Crock Pot at least once a week. I make everything in it from Stews, Soups… Heck I’ve even made barbecue ribs in my crock pot!

Check it out

  • Barbecue Beef Back Ribs
  •  Barbecue Pork Spare Ribs

There’s not a whole lot of foods that I can’t make in my Crock Pot! In this post, I’m going to show you how I make Southern Style Pinto Beans with fork tender ham hocks!

The beans cook perfectly in the crock pot, you don't need to hover over the pot and watch to make sure they're cooking up!

This pinto bean recipe is super easy, and practically fool proof.  You won’t need a lot of ingredients, and you don’t have to worry about being in the kitchen all day, because again- we’re using our crock pot.

I chose to use pinto beans because I always have them on hand. Why? Because In my area pinto beans are cheap! I can buy a 10 lb bag of dry pinto beans for less than $5.  Other than the price, pinto beans are really good ( I personally like most beans).

I used ham hocks to flavor the beans. If you don’t have ham hocks, or don’t like them. Here are some substitutions

  • Smoked Neck Bones
  • Smoked  Turkey : legs, necks wings
  • Bacon Ends

I know some people are going to ask me if they can used smoked sausage, and you can – but I don’t recommend it. Why? Because we will be slow cooking the beans for a long period of time. When you cook smoked sausage for long periods, the sausage looses all of it’s flavor, and is extremely bland once the everything is cooked.

Use ham hocks over smoked sausage because when sausage is overcooked, it becomes bland. You're trying to infuse the beans with the flavors of the ham.

Again , this recipe is super easy. Even if you’re a beginner in the kitchen – you can pull this pinto bean recipe off.  Below, I’m going to share step by step pictures on how I made my southern style pinto beans. If you have any questions, make sure to leave them down below.

Let’s Get Started!!

Wash the beans and sort them.

  •  The first thing that I did, was sort & wash the beans. Keep in mind that dry beans need to be sorted, and washed prior to cooking. Why sort them? Because occasionally you will have rotten ugly beans in your bag of beans along with pebbles.. ALWAYS sort your beans!

Gather the ham bones, garlic and onions.

  •  I used 1 large smoked ham hock, 1 large yellow onion, and minced garlic

Sort and wash the beans before you put them into the crockpot.

  • After sorting & washing the beans, I put them in my Crock Pot.  No need to soak the beans overnight, or hours before. Since the beans are being slow cooked, they will have plenty of time to soak in the Crock Pot. LOL…. No additional soaking is needed 🙂

No need to soak the beans, they'll soak as they cook.

  • Next, I added in the diced onions and minced garlic

Add the meat on top and then fill with water.

  • Place the ham hock ( or substitute) in the Crock Pot, then pour in the water.

Tip: instead of using water you can use chicken broth, to add more flavor. I didn’t have any broth on hand, so I just used water. However, my beans still came out very flavorful!

You can use broth instead of water, but if you don't have broth on hand, it still comes out super flavorful.

  •  Sprinkle in some Mrs. Dash or seasoning salt and ground black pepper.

Set on high for 6 hours

  •  Set the Crock Pot on HIGH and let it cook for 6 hours.

Serve over rice or with cornbread and veggies!

Once the beans were done, I served them over rice and served it along with sweet cornbread and a green beans!

I truly love making Crock Pot meals during my busy week. It helps free up a lot of my time. While dinner cooks, I tend to my other duties!

Let me know if you guys want more Crock Pot Recipes!

However, I do add a little bit of liquid smoke. I’m not sure how I will get your response but I’m looking forward to it. I’m sure all of the other recipes you have are amazing

Just cook the beans as directed then check firmness if it is done stop cooking, if they need more time, leave then on and check until desired consistency.

This is my go to recipe. I double it, add a little extra garlic and sometimes use ham shanks instead of hocks because they yeild more meat. I don’t use Mrs. Dash so I substitute it with a little extra pepper and Lawry’s season salt and set my crockpot to low for 8-10 hours. The family eats it for dinner or to change it up we eat it for breakfast with a couple over easy eggs and sautéed diced onion and bell pepper.

Thank you! This is an excellent recipe for the working stiff who just needs to feed a wife and some kids. The ingredients are few and sensible, there’s no browning anything separately, and the beans need no soaking. Everything just goes straight into the crock pot and then time and temperature do their thing. I smoked a turkey for Thanksgiving with the neck jammed into the cavity. That neck and the wing tips were my ham hock substitute. I had half an onion in the fridge and half a bell pepper, so I diced those instead of the whole onion. I chopped four big cloves of fresh garlic instead of the minced stuff from a jar. Finally, instead of seasoning salt I used plain salt, pepper and paprika. I think these three basic ingredients do the job of many mixes well enough. The beans turned out fine. Soft, moist, and perfectly flavorful, not too smoky. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for this recipe! I had bought some smoked ham hocks and split them with my mother. My plan was to make beans for the very first time. (I know. At 62, you would think…) As a true believer in all things slow cooker and easy, I found this recipe yesterday and made it today.

It was wonderful! The beans were done just right, not too mushy, and so tasty! I forgot to make rice or cornbread, but I will do that tomorrow and have leftovers while watching the football game.

Making your beans today. Can’t wait to try them. I had no minced garlic so I added some garlic powder, we aren’t big on an over onion flavor so I opted for half and figure if hubby wants more flavor he can cut up extra onion on top once there done cooking. Also didn’t have a neck bone but had ham pieces for seasoning pack of meat I had bought. I’m hoping it will add enough flavor. Only had 5 cups of broth so I followed your lead and made up the other 2 cups with water. (I have a ninja 4 in 1 6 quart cooker. )
I’ll let you know how it turned out later this evening.

Was looking for a good ham and bean crockpot recipe and saw this one. Currently in the crockpot as we speak. Did not have a ham hock, but did have spiral ham pieces that I bought at Walmart-live in Texas and as one reviewer posted the ham hocks available here are slightly bereft of meat. Looking forward to dinner tonight, as it has turned off windy and chilly here today. The hubs and I are originally from Georgia and really miss southern cooking. Crockpot is getting a workout after collecting dust for many years. Bon Apetit!!

To take alot of the gas off the beans, you can add one whole potato to the pot. Just remember to remove the potato and toss it away. It absorbs alot of what causes gas.

I told my daughter how delicious this recipe is. She was wondering if the beans would still have lots of flavor if you didn’t add meat? Or do you have a suggestion how to cook beans in the crock pot with out using meat ? I think she has white beans in her pantry.

Hi Brigitte. The smoked meat adds most of the flavor. If she doesn’t want meat, she can add more seasoning and etc.

Help. I wanted more meat and less fat so I boiled extra ham hocks in advance and I got plenty of skin and bones in addition to the meat I wanted. Also I got a layer of hard fat that is going in the trash but what is the creamy pudding-like stuff under that? Should I be putting it back into or throwing it out of my ham hocks and beans? Somebody wise me up, please.

I got a request for beans with ham and this is the recipe I will be cooking. 🙂 I’ve noticed some recipes call for smoked ham hocks but it appears that you cook yours raw opposed to smoked/cooked. Any thoughts on why some call for smoked? Does the smoked flavor go away after cooking in the crockpot anyway?

I did a variation of this recipe and used a ham hock from a ham that I had smoked in a smoker cabinet using hickory for the flavor. The hock had a lot of meat left on it and a lot of the smoke flavor had seeped into it. It was TRULY amazing! And yes, the ham just comes off with a fork, very tender, very delicious!

Hello Rosie. I was looking for a slow cooker recipe on cooking pinto beans and ham hock. I saw the website iHeartRecipes on the google search engine and clicked on it. This will be my first time cooking pinto beans in a slow cooker and using the slow cooker. My boyfriend and I works the night shift so I need to start using my slow cooker because we sleep doing the day. I enjoyed your southern cornbread video. It was very good. I see that you use different ingredients in your cornbread. I might try it. I usually use self-rising yellow cornmeal, buttermilk, eggs, a little flour, a little white sugar, vegetable oil and a little butter. Also, I already subscribed. Have a blessed evening. Freda H. This recipe takes me back to my childhood! It was one of our staple meals. My Mamaw called them soup beans and we usually had them with fried potatoes, greens, and cornbread. Sometimes she’d make “bean cakes” (like savory pancakes) with the leftovers. I wasn’t crazy about beans as a kid, but I loved those bean cakes! Now I love pinto beans too and the Crock-Pot makes them a lot easier! Thanks for the great recipes!

This is a fantastic recipe if you remember one thing – check your slow cooker often. Every slow cooker is different, and my Ninja slow cooker, for example, had the beans nearly overdone at 4.5 hours. So glad I checked. My only advice is, after the 3.5 hour mark, check AT LEAST every 30 minutes, or better, every 15 minutes, for the best, most desired result. After you learn your slow cooker a time or two, you will know exactly what is best for your situation.

I have this in the crock pot right now. I appreciate the simple recipe! I am using the ham bone and hock left over from our Thanksgiving ham. I’ve never made this before, but it is a favorite dish of my husbands. It seems like a lot of water, but I’m assuming the beans soak that up as they cook? I’ll report back after it’s done this afternoon. Here’s hoping I didn’t mess it up LOL, although I’m hoping not because I followed the recipe as closely as possible!

Yes! I made this and ohhh girl. I felt like the big Mama of the family. Lol. Everyone from my kids to my in-laws was complimenting me on how good it taste and what did I do to get it to taste like I was an old soul making it! You know I was all smile. I went to visit my in-laws and the first thing my father in law said. You put your foot in them beans. So, you know it was on point. Thank you for sharing. You helped to get me some momma points. Lol. God bless and please keep sharing!

Family was super happy with the beans!! So simple to make but the flavors are so amazing. I was not able to find chicken stock in my pantry so used some of the tomato/chicken bouillon that I have for Spanish rice.

This might be a dumb question. But what is sorting and washing the beans mean? I assume just running them under water but what’s sorting? Are some bad? If so how do you tell. I’ve eaten this several times but my family members made it. This is my 1st attempt and yours looks amazing!

Sometimes dry beans include rocks, rotted dry beans, and etc. You will need to remove those, then rinse the beans under water.

Sounds delicious. I’d like to use two smoked ham hocks and am wondering if I should use less salt. I know some hams are more salty than others.

This was delicious! Thank you for sharing it. My husband went on and on about how much he enjoyed it. We ate on rice with fresh tomatoes and avocado sprinkled on the top, and I also made some little fry bread from defrosted Rhode’s rolls on the side.

Hi, I cooked the crockpot pinto beans with smoked turkey drumstick, it was delicious. I will be trying your crockpot mac and cheese next. I’ve had a crockpot for years and never used it much. I’m going to get my family and friends to start cooking your crockpot recipes! Thank you, JC

Thank you for this recipe. I was a little unsure about the seasonings and use a small pork hock which I remove when it is tender, and prepare without the fat covering. I also always
soak the dry beans in water overnight before using them.

Your recipe is delicious, and I also always bake cornbread to go with the beans. YUM

This recipe is absolutely perfect. I didn’t think I liked pinto beans, but I made them because my husband does. 30 years, it’s the 1st time I decided to cook vs. a can of chili. Well…the best. I ate until I thought I was going to pass out, and he was absolutely pleased. Now, I am trying the recipe for smoked turkey.
