 How to make tender southern, soul food style pork neck bones in the CrockPot!

Soul food recipes. I get it, y’all want more. Apparently there are several recipe that you want NOW, and honey, I am here to deliver. Let’s start off with some good old fashioned pork neck bones. In the past I’ve shared a couple of recipe for pork neck bones, but this time around I’m going to show you how to make them in the slow cooker!

These tender soul food style pork neck bones are so tender they melt in your mouth.

You’ll find that this recipe is extremely easy, and very affordable. You need minimal ingredients for this old fashioned southern dish. Serve these pork neck bones with rice & collard greens, and you’re good!

Soul Food Style Pork Neck Bones

This recipe for soul food style pork neck bones will give you tender, fall-of-the-bone meat that's flavorful, succulent and juicy. This is a don't miss dish, perfect for Sunday dinner and the slow cooker makes it so easy!

Ingredients

  • 4 lbs pork neck bones
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 1/4 tsp coarse kosher salt
  • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp parsley flakes
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 large yellow onion chopped
  • 2 cups water or chicken broth

Instructions

  • Clean the pork neck bones.
  • Drizzle the neck bones with the vegetable oil, and apple cider vinegar.
  • Season the neck bones with all of the seasonings, then place them in the slow cooker.
  • Sprinkle in the cornstarch, and stir. Make sure that all the neck bones are coated with the cornstarch.
  • Toss in the chopped onions.
  • Pour in the water or chicken broth.
  • Place the lid on the slow cooker, and cook on high for 4 hours.
  • Make sure that you periodically stir the neck bones ( every hour).
  • Once done serve, and enjoy! XOXO

          You can use arrowroot powder or tapioca starch to substitute the corn starch. Hope that helps.

          I used ground flax instead of cornstarch for a lower carb option. My husband liked it very much and my 13 yr old asked for seconds so I guess it worked.

        I’ve tried to fix pork neck bones several times but they Never come out right. I guess I cook them tooo long to where the meat fall off the bones but I have to cause them don’t look completely cooked. Could you please tell what I’m doing wrong? Should I soak them in vinegar for awhile first?

    Ms. Rosie, I have tried several of your recipes and LOVE them. I noticed that you have alot of recipes to cook in the crockpot but on the high setting. I usually cook my food in the crockpot on low since I am at work. Can you please give times for cooking them on low? Thank you so much

    If I could fix the pin on this I would. It uses the picture of mashed potatoes to save the pin. I made this for dinner tonight but took the meat off the bones and added it back to the gravy. It’s delicious!!

      Yes. The same recipe can be used on the stove top. Cook on med for 1 hour 30 minutes .

    These were the best neckbones that I have eaten in my life. That’s saying something as I am a senior citizen. I had sworn off of them because I don’t want to work to get my meat off the bone. Well, no problem here. Stick the fork to the bone and the meat falls off! The bones even separated. I followed the recipe,but I did cook them for five hours as I had a bit more than four pounds. I had cabbage and mashed potatoes and with the gravy, I was in food heaven. This recipe is definitely a keeper.

    Hello Rosie,
    My husband has ask me to cook Neck bone for the past 3 1/2 we have been married. His Mom fixes them but they are very bland and not seasoned at all! I’m making these today and I am sure they will WOW him!! He loves soul food, we both grew up eating it. I LOVE to cook and cook often but have never cooked neck bone, so this will be my first. I am fixing dried lg lima beans, turnip greens, and mashed potatoes and corn bread!!! Can’t wait!! Thanks again for sharing!

    Rosie I have question. If I use flour instead of cornstarch word I use vall purpose is self rising flour. I have both all purpose and self rising flour. I don’t keep cornstarch but I buy a box. Is there particular branch you recommend.

    Hi Rosie I just made these neckbone’s and they are the best neck bones that I have eating thus far, I want to personally thank you for this recipe I had a taste for them on last week went to the meeting house this morning to pick them up put them in the pressure cooker hour later they were ready thanks again the only difference I pulled off the first boil and I added
    Coconut oil and fresh garlic and two hole onions I put them in a food processor

    Your the best. I was raised on Soul Food, didn’t know it as such, we just called it Country Cooking. Cook whats’s available, and eat what’s cooked.     It came out absolutely delicious. I used smoked neck bones and I omitted the applie cider vinegar. I used sea salt instead and added fresh carrots, potatoes, green beans and a green bell pepper. I also added complete seasoning and a little more garlic powder and pepper. It was amazing!! My husband and I finished our plates so fast I had to ask… “ Did I fix us both enough?” Lol! We absolutely loved it. This recipe will be on repeat in our household for sure.

    My wife doesn’t know it but I’m in love with you. I have commented on you and your recipes before, have tried many, and read many others. My favorites are the Great Soul Food dishes created from the less desirable portions of the animal, i.e. Pigs feet, neckbone etc. I have used this recipe several times with amazing results each time. I do add some chopped green and red bell peppers to your ingredients. I’m not a great cook. But give me a slow cooker and a recipe and I’m good to go

      Excellent recipe and neckbones came out amazing! My only personal add to the recipe was 1tbsp of Lawry’s and a few red pepper flakes for a little added spice. They were delicious! Thank you as this is now my go-to neckbones recipe

    Well this old canadian gal had never heard of pork neck bones, let alone eaten one. I won’t tell you how I can to have 5 lbs of them in my fridge, but thought I would google it anyway, and decided on this recipe. It was a gift from the heavens! Today I’m making my second batch with a few tweaks, but I won’t ever forget the first time I ate these. I couldn’t get enough! Who knew? (well I guess you did! lol ). 5 out 5 stars and a big virtual hug to you!!

    Great recipe!! I was skeptic at first with the cornstarch, I added a little more water as it was cooking but not much more, it turned out DELICIOUS! I made some white rice for all the delicious gravy it made….YUMMY!!

    Bought these by accident didn’t read and thought they were pork shoulder chunks but decided I could figure something out but remained so skeptical even while they were cooking. I was amazed!!! They were absolutely delicious!!! Followed the recipe almost exactly just used a little less spices since had a little less neck bones. Served with mashed potatoes and lima beans.

    I have never eaten or cooked neck bones before. This recipe is delicious. I WILL be making this again. So easy one pot meal to make, I made boil in bag rice. Easy cleanup.

    I look up recipes all the time but I’ve never left a comment before. This dish turned out THAT good. I dare say it’s the most delicious food I’ve ever eaten. I put it over rice, stovetop stuffing, and black beans. OMG it’s so effing good!!!!! I followed the recipe exactly except that I seared the necks on both sides on a cast iron first, threw them in the slow cooker, and then quickly sautéed the onions in the same cast iron pot. I used homemade chicken broth, and cooked on high for like 4.5 hours and then on low for an extra hour or so. AMAZING. My 3 year old loved it also. Thank you for sharing this recipe

    I tried this recipe in my InstaPot. Turned out GREAT! I pressure cooked for about 15 minutes first and then left on slow cooker for about 2 hours. I did add celery (chopped leaves).

    I sell forest raised pork in the Chicagoland area, and this is among my daughter’s favorite recipes! The only problem is my wife (and customers) wants to use neck bones for tomato pasta sauce, but it’s great to have another option. Great recipe for an underappreciated, wallet friendly, cut of meat.     61 yrs old..was in my 20s 1st time i ever had pork neck bones and only had them in spaghetti sauce. I picked 3 up at local butcher and thought theres gotta be something else i can do with them. Didnt wanna make soup…and alas I landed on this recipe. Only thing i didnt have was corn starch but reading thru comments i “went for it” using flour as substitute and making on top of the stove. Grant it I only had 1.25 lbs but…OH HOW I WISH I HAD AT LEAST 3 MORE LBS!
    This is absolutely, 100% DELICIOUS!
    Ive had a bottle of apple cider vinegar in my cupboard for heck a very long time (i hate the taste of vinegar) but listened/watched the video and followed the recipe pretty much to a T (being shy 3# i kinda guesstimated on spice measurements)

    I cant wait to start looking thru and trying more of YOUR recipes..now that my daughter flew this Mommas nest been a very long time since ive taken time to cook..really cook for just myself let alone try something new.
    Sorry for how long this comment is but I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW DELICIOUS THESE WERE! Thank you again..future comments hopefully will be shorter. Looking forward to making them for my daughter and her family (course i have to look for your recipe on collard greens another NEW for me.     I had bought some neckbones for my daughter and her and her husband turned their nose up at them so I brought them home and looked up your recipe and I fixed it. It was so good. Oh my goodness it was better than anything I have have had.made rice and greens to go with it with cornbread. Thank you so much I never cooked them before but they came out perfect they fell apart.

    Cooked on high for 4 hours and came out Soo soft. Meat falling off on some pieces, can easily cut with a spoon. Sooo good! I was worried i was gunna mess up and they come out like rubber or something. I think I used too much corn starch or too little water cuz the liquid in my crock pot is much thicker than yours in the video but I’m gunna make some potatoes to go with this. NGL I was a little horrified when I was cleaning the pork but worth it. Will definitely make again.

      What size slow cooker are you using? If it’s big enough for everything to comfortable fit, maybe just add one more hour to the cooking.
