Cranberry Apple Bread Stuffing Made Completely From Scratch!

Last week I shared my recipe for my Down Home Cornbread Dressing. In this post, I’m going to show you how to make a stuffing. This delicious cranberry apple bread stuffing consists of bread, apple bits, cranberries, and bacon. It’s the perfect recipe to dress up your holiday poultry, and it’s actually quite easy to make!

I know what you’re thinking….”What is the difference between dressing and stuffing?!” I’ll tell you! Dressing is baked in a greased or oiled bake dish, and stuffing is STUFFED into chicken, turkey, and etc. That is the only difference. Technically, the way I will be preparing this, it should be called dressing, because I’m not going to STUFF this into the poultry; however, you can definitely do so. Let’s get started with the recipe!

Prep Time 15 minutes minutes
Cook Time 1 hour hour 10 minutes minutes
Total Time 1 hour hour 25 minutes minutes
Servings 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 12 slices  wheat or white bread cut in cubes
  • 3 buttermilk biscuits cubed ( you don’t need these, but I think it made it even better!)
  • 1/4 pound bacon  chopped
  • 2 small granny smith apples chopped apples
  • 1 cup whole berry cranberry sauce
  • 2 tsp ground sage
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 cup apple juice   I used a concentrate, but you can use whatever apple juice you want to use!
  • 1 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 2 lightly beaten eggs

Instructions

  • Spray a baking dish with cooking spray, and place the bread cubes into the dish. Bake the Bread for about 15-20 minutes on 350 F.
  • While the bread is toasting, be sure to stir it occasionally so that it will not burn at the bottom.
  • While the bread is toasting, prepare the bacon. Fry the bacon over medium heat until it is nice and Crisp. Be sure to reserve the bacon drippings.
  • Once the bread is nice and toasted, let it cool. After cooling, place the bread cubes into a large mixing bowl or dish.
  • Pour the chicken broth all over the bread cubes followed by the apple juice, and stir.
  • Add the whole berry cranberry sauce, chopped apples, and crumble in the bacon. Drizzle in about 2-3 tablespoons of the bacon drippings, then fold in the ingredients.
  • Sprinkle in the sage, salt, and peppers, and stir.
  • Last, but not least, add in the beaten eggs. Make sure you stir everything until it is well combined.
  • Place the stuffing/dressing into a well greased 13×9 baking dish.
  • Bake the dressing/stuffing on 350 F for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, remove the dressing/stuffing from the oven, give it a stir, then bake it for an additional 15 -20 minutes.
  • Let the stuffing/dressing sit for 5 minutes, then serve!

I wouldn’t go that route, but you can make the stuffing the day before and reheat it. 🙂

    Hi Rosie,

In your stuffing recipe you did not say at what stage one should add the buttermilk biscuits. Please advise. Thanks!!

It’s optional, but you would add it along with the bread.

Roise I made your cranberry Apple bread stuffing on MLK day on 1/15/18 along with your roasted holiday chicken and blackeye peas . Rosie it was so good. I was nervous about stuffing because I use cheap round bread at Walmart. Next time I will use aronld bread or Sarah Lee bread but it was still delicious. I use Wal-Mart great value Apple juice concentrate juice in bottle. Store didn’t have concentrate in can. I asked delivery man and looked in frozen drink aisle. I use oceanspray cranberry whole berry cranberry. I use swann broth I use whole canwhichbis about two cups instead of one half in your recipes. Rosie it was so delicious. With the bacon it was right amount sweet and tanty. My man say it was sweet. He say food was delicious. Thanks Rosie your recipes have man put ring on it. Lol.
